Lesson 281
I can be hurt by nothing but my thoughts.
“Father, Your Son is perfect. When I think that I am hurt in any way, it is because I have forgotten who I am, and that I am as You created me. Your Thoughts can only bring me happiness. If ever I am sad or hurt or ill, I have forgotten what You think, and put my little meaningless ideas in place of where Your Thoughts belong, and where they are. I can be hurt by nothing but my thoughts. The Thoughts I think with You can only bless. The Thoughts I think with You alone are true (ACIM Lesson 281 1:1-7).
Today’s statement brings us back to one of the first and most foundational lessons in A Course in Miracles, Lesson 2: I have given everything I see in this room [on this street, from this window, in this place] all the meaning that is has for me.” We are returning full circle, albeit more directly and at a much deeper level, to the idea that all our suffering is caused by guess who? Our own thoughts. Our own selves.
We are the living dichotomy in that we hold the key to the Light, while at the same time we hold the power to create darkness. The difference in the keys we hold, however, is simple, a mere thought. As we have been exploring our freedom, we have recognized that we are free to choose our Divinity just as we are free to choose our demise. The outer world can be one we see with the Heart or one that we see with human eyes. The question is, would you rather choose to remember or choose to forget? Yes, it is that simple. And, yes, it can be that easy.
“I will not hurt myself today. For I am far beyond all pain. My Father placed me safe in Heaven, watching over me. And I would not attack the Son He loves, for what He loves is also mine to love” (ACIM Lesson 281 2:1-4).
Billy Joel sings, it’s “a matter of trust,” and that is the melody that is ever playing amongst our daily life experience. In each circumstance, in each breath, are we willing to see perfection: the perfection of our brothers and sisters, the perfection of a situation, and the perfection of All? Are we willing to align our thoughts with God, their original birthplace?
Sometimes it is superstition as to why we do not trust in the Truth. We believe that if we do not abide by the world’s laws then we will be doomed to suffer. However, the irony is that by abiding in the world’s laws, it guarantees only suffering. Why not try something new and radical and witness thoughts for what they are? Why not live by the guidance of the Holy Spirit and how She speaks to us in this world?
In Truth, nothing can touch you, harm you, or change you. You are ever perfect and ever holy. Anything other is a misguided thought. Let today bring holy correction and awareness to your thoughts. Allow today to be your living trust that this is so. Namaste.
