About Kathy

Kathy Ramírez is an avid traveler, storyteller, writer and presenter. She is the creator and performer of the one-woman storytelling show, Mind-FULL: Stories of a Reluctant Meditator. The story is based on the various 10-day silent meditation retreats she has attended over the years and the humor and reluctance that can arise as one dares to sit in silence to observe the contents of the ever-maddening mind.

In addition to using the medium of spoken and written word, Kathy also directed a short adventure film, Walk in Miracles, that documented her pilgrimage from Asheville to Harmony, North Carolina in 2016. She walked in peace with the purpose of exploring how the backcountry of North Carolina greeted a modern day pilgrim. She has frequently discussed this pilgrimage, and others, with groups such as Black Mountain Center for the Arts, OLLI and various undergraduate programs at UNCA, Asheville area charter schools, The Namaste Center, A Course In Miracles groups, and the REI monthly Camino presentations.

Kathy’s travels are the cornerstone of her stories. By living and participating in other cultures, Kathy has seen the power of sharing stories with one another. With a passion for other languages, Kathy also presents her writings and tales in Spanish.

For over three years, Kathy lived in New Zealand working as a personal trainer, yoga instructor and studio manager for Hot Yoga New Zealand. In other periods of her life Kathy has lived in Spain, learning the Spanish language in the small town of Trujillo and at the University of Salamanca. In particular at USAL, Kathy focused her studies to include the Arabic influence and the role of women throughout Spanish History. While in Spain, Kathy has walked various Caminos, led evenings of meditation in Spanish, and participated in many intercambios to help students learn conversational skills both in Spanish and English.

Kathy has volunteered with UBELONG, working at a daycare center in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. She has spent time in the Copper Canyon of Mexico learning about the Tarahumara people and has also traveled to the Sacred Valley in Peru to investigate indigenous cultures and to observe how such cultures continue to maintain the agricultural and spiritual practices of their ancestors, even today.

Kathy is an advocate for the Free Hugs Initiative and gives free hugs in her current city of Asheville, NC. However, she also makes it a point to do so while traveling and has done so in Peru and Spain. It is her means of sharing in the love and peace of the world, while also giving her the opportunity to speak with others to gain a deeper understanding of the story we all share and live.
