Lesson 44
God is the light in which I see.
Think about a time when you just turned off the lights. Maybe you were lying in bed or on the couch but for a moment you could see just fine and then as you turned the lights off, you couldn’t see…at first. But then as times goes on, your eyes adjust to the darkness. You still can’t see as good as when the lights were on but you can still see…a little, enough. This is similar to the trick we have created, thinking we can see in the darkness of our mind, thus choosing to live in this darkness. This is what we are correcting today.
“You cannot see in the darkness, and you cannot make light. You can make darkness and then think you see in it, but light reflects life, and this therefore an aspect of creation (ACIM Lesson 44 1:2-3).”
Today we are reminded that although it may seem dark and bleak around us, it is the light that is within us from which we truly see. And this light is eternal.
Lesson 44 also reminds me of the analogy that our eyes are like movie projectors, projecting our light within onto the screen known as the world. That light that is within us is what shines through the projectors showing us our “reality or thoughts.” We are never truly in darkness as light is always shining within us. The question comes down to, do we choose to see or not?
“In order to see, you must recognize that light is within, not without. You do not see outside ourselves, nor is the equipment for seeing outside you. An essential part of this equipment is the light that makes seeing possible. It is with you always, making vision possible in every circumstance (ACIM Lesson 44 2:1-4).”
Today’s practice periods are so gentle as we discover this light that is within us. We have done just the right amount of training and untraining of the mind to make this possible. The Course says more than once today that “You are attempting to reach Him (ACIM Lesson 44 6:4).” I like this idea but I can’t help but feel like God has been calling me and today is my time to turn off the noise that is playing in the background of my head and pick up the phone, to sit in this quiet time together as She shows me the Light that is within me.
That is the softness of today. It is the gentle reminder that beyond the voice of ego is this quiet stillness known as Light and Love. And even if thoughts of the world pass by, they are still covered in light as they are valued in their efforts to help you remember Who and What You Are. Everything is truly of the Light if You See with the Light.
“Try to think of light formless and without limit, as you pas by the thoughts of this world. And do not forget that they cannot hold you to the world unless you give them the power to do so (ACIM Lesson 44 10:2-3).”
If you identify with the Light that is within you, the movie that is played out, as your life, can only be of this Light. Today we are truly washed by the water of Light. A fountain of water that flows deep within us, through us, and extended beyond us. Let yourself be in this soft flow of remembrance today.
